What we want
We're looking for strong, character-driven stories that are fun and enjoyable reads. It is understandable that the word count may inhibit suspensful plot, but we believe that any writer worth half his weight in ink can summon enough adventure and excitement within a short alloted space. Make your stories believable and unique. For every columned genre, bring a story that will linger in one's head forever. We want our readers to resonate with these reads, question them, irk them, excite them, and most importantly, bring them into a new and wondorous world.
What we don't want
This is not a place for non-fiction or articles. We do not publish erotica and discourage any type of written work that includes the rape of women or men; in either case, we won't publish it. Also, if you feel the need to write about vampires and werewolves, do so in a creative fashion. We accept original unpublished work only. We do not accept non-fiction or peotry of any kind. Additionally we do not accept reprints.
Word Count
We will take short shorts witha minimum of 100 words in length and a maximum of 1000; anything over that will be counted as a short story.
Short stories can be anywhere from 1000 to 6000 words.
Response time
Usually we are able to respond to submission within a week of submission. Often times much quicker; however, if you do not hear from us after a month please contact us at our email address.
Payment
Here at Mossy-Hearth Magazine, we believe that it is not only a courtesy but an obligation to pay our published authors. In our perspective, a professional author is one who gets paid for his or her writing in addition to being published. We are enthusiastic about promoting our published authors, so we recommend that you create your own blog or website to promote your work; we have a page dedicated to all of our authors. Each story that we decide to publish to our online magazine receives two things: a flat-rate payment of 5 dollars per story and reader exposure of one’s work.
Rights
Upon agreement, the author will grant us First Electronic publication Rights, which will revert back to the author for reprint after a period of six months. By allowing us to publish your work, you grant us serial rights and non-exclusive Anthology rights if we decide to re-publish your work. Additional payment will be included.
How to Submit
All submissions should be in RTF format and Constantia font. Try to justify the text. Basically, all contests and standard submissions will be the same, with a few minor exceptions. For all submissions, please do not go beyond 6,000 words—try to shoot between two thousand and four thousand, which provides for a good length in the short story column; however, if you’ve got a spectacular 6,000 word manuscript, I’m not going to complain. (Remember with Standard submissions you can submit any fictitious work and we’ll require no reading fee.)
